Home Improvement Projects - What to Do Before Budgeting

With a bachelor of science in finance and marketing from the University of Oregon, Dominic O'Dierno has been the CEO of the investment firm Amare since 2012. When not occupied providing his services for the firm's clients as a senior consultant, Dominic O'Dierno enjoys golfing, traveling, and undertaking home improvement projects.

Home improvement projects are an excellent way to provide a better place for the family while adding value to the overall property. Most people think that budgeting is the first step of the project when this is not always true.

A tip for people who enjoy home improvement projects is to start by finding inspiration. Images from showrooms, magazines, or websites such as Pinterest are a source of inspiration.

After finding inspiration, it is time to think about the space by measuring and drawing the dimensions, location of windows, doors, and services. After calculating the available area, the inspiration can be sorted out and used for drawing a detailed plan. It is essential to consider what is possible in the open space, and a tip for planning is to use a scale of 1:20, in which 5 centimeters represent 1 meter in real life.

The final step before budgeting is to delimit the details such as materials, fittings, and fixtures. This step is necessary to understand how much the entire project will cost, and every item that needs to be purchased should be put on a list before budgeting.
